1863 English translation of Don Quijote de la Mancha is filled with beautiful, highly-detailed engravings by Gustav Doré. These illustrations aid the reader in comprehending the text and clarify the themes of the work through composition, lighting, and visual symbolism. In this presentation, I will analyze one illustration in particular, examining how the formal elements of visual art can greatly enhance the reader’s appreciation of this specific work of literature—and of literature in general.
