This lecture will provide a brief history of temperament, focusing upon the four most important temperament systems. Topics will include: how the systems were developed, the relative
functionality/practicality of the systems, the problem this practicality presents with respect to “ideal” tuning, and which systems are in use today and why they are in use. There will be a mathematical explanation for each temperament as well as sound demonstrations, giving the audience the opportunity to hear the differences among the different systems.
