Dr. Philip Hubbard is a state hero and an icon for African-Americans. Dr. Hubbard was the first African-American professor at the University of Iowa, as well as the first African-American Vice President in the Big Ten. The dedication of Hubbard Park in Iowa City, and the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award mark his continuing influence. Beyond his great academic achievements, Dr. Hubbard’s life is a rich tapestry of experience and perseverance.
In conjunction with the Black History Museum of Cedar Rapids, through Catherine Stewart, I conducted an oral history interview of Dr. Hubbard in order to preserve his personal life story.
The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the process I went through, not only the oral history history interview, but the process of creating a documentary worthy of capturing the essence of Dr. Hubbard. I will also be displaying my completed documentary of the interviews with Dr. Hubbard.
