GIRLSS (Great, Intelligent, Real Ladies Showing Support) Group is a mentoring program for girls held at the Mount Vernon Middle School. Its purpose is to help middle school girls with issues of self-esteem, body image, relationships to others, and self-empowerment. The group began in the fall of 1997 and is currently in its second year. College women and middle school girls meet each week to discuss different topics as a group. The group also does service projects. In addition, mentors meet with their middle school girl one-on-one to do activities together.
GIRLSS Group has been a successful program so far, but has dealt with many challenges. I will discuss some of these challenges, as well as things I have learned that are needed to make a mentoring program
