Symbolism is a language all within itself. Symbolism is a language told through story, metaphor, and icons. Symbolism is the ability to take words and make a complex meaning that is worth more words than any picture. Manuel Rivas wrote “La lengua de los mariposas” to convey a story filled with hidden meaning about the Spanish Civil War. Through the use of symbols, Manuel Rivas gives an emotional explanation of the Spanish Civil War while telling a fictional short story that takes place during the Civil War. This work aims to interpret some of the symbols used within the story and explain the interworking of the Spanish Civil War.
