Throughout history, suspension of the human body from hooks has been performed, particularly in eastern cultures. With the popularization of types of body modification such as piercing, the practice of suspension has developed among participants in modern western cultures, and is ritually performed in places like Europe, the United States, and Canada. The primary focus of my study is based on information gathered from personal interviews and media sources that explain and define aspects of the suspension subculture in the United States, including entrance into the subculture, how suspensions are organized, and reasons why the practice exists in America today.
