Currently, Americans depend heavily on oil from foreign countries to produce gasoline for transportation. This reliance is not advantageous. In addition, petroleum-based gasoline is environmentally unfriendly and available in finite resources. Ethanol, however, is an infinitely renewable alternative fuel made from corn that could eliminate reliance on foreign oil, reduce pollution and enrich Iowa’s local economy. In order to achieve these goals, a conscious effort by legislators and ethanol producers is needed to increase use of ethanol in proportion to petroleum gasoline in American automobiles.
