The concept of lesbian separatism stems from the historical exclusion of lesbians from the Women’s Liberation Movement and from the Gay Liberation Movement. Separatism is a step towards self-respect and understanding, but it has also been accused of being elitist and exclusive. Lesbians of color, for example, would be forced to choose between sexuality and race. I plan to illustrate the pros and cons of this theory by using a dualistic approach. I will compare and contrast specific concepts in order to find a middle ground as a new theory. From my research I expect to find that there are some good ideas of lesbian separatism but it does not work for everyone. My sources include Tales of the Lavender Menace (Karla Jay) and Stone Butch Blues (Leslie Feinberg).
